You have decided where you want to go, and you have researched the hotel and its pet policy. Now, it is time to prepare a list of things to take with you on the trip. Here’s a short list of what you may need on your way and once you arrive at the hotel.

First, take along your pet! What is the benefit of staying in a pet-friendly hotel and leaving your companion at home? If the hotel allows animals, then consider taking your pet along for the journey! It will be fun for the whole family. Before you go, make sure that he is properly identifiable. He needs to have a collar with a dog tag that has your contact information. If he has a microchip, then make sure that the microchip’s database is updated before you leave. Also, make sure that his tags identify the presence of the microchip. It’s a good idea to have your cell phone number on his contact information. That way, if he gets lost, then you can be contacted directly.

Second, almost all hotels require a crate. It does not have to be an extravagant living arrangement. The crate that you dog travels in to your destination will work just fine. Most hotels ask that your dog is crated while you are away. That way, if a cleaning crew comes into your room, your pooch and the crew will be safe. Don’t leave your pet in the crate all the time. When you are there, let him run and play so that he can get plenty of exercise!

Third, don’t forget the food and water! You always take food and water, depending on the time it takes to get to your destination. But, you need to make sure that you take enough for the trip and for the first couple of days at the hotel. Clean water is fairly easy to come by. But, you never know if you will be able to go shopping for food as soon as you get there, or if there will be a shopping center close to the hotel. You should also take plenty of treats for the ride and for the stay. Rewarding your dog for his good behavior is a great way to ensure that he does not tear up the room. It also gives him something to look forward to if you leave him in his crate.

Fourth, the leash! Whether you are taking your dog out of the car for a break or outside of the hotel for exercise, you need to make sure he is on a leash. Even if you are just taking him for a walk in the parking lot, you need a way to secure him. Leashes ensure safety for your dog and the other hotel guests.

What do you do to make your dog comfortable at home? Does he have a favorite place to sleep? If so, then it is a good idea to take that along if you can. The hotel will be a strange place for your dog, so anything that is familiar to him will make him more comfortable.

Don’t forget the toys! You don’t want your pooch to be bored when you are not around, so make sure you take along his favorite toys. Like his bedding, his toys are familiar to him. They are something he can play with and enjoy!

Does your dog have allergies or take medication? If he has allergies, then it is a good idea to take along your veterinarian recommended allergy medicine. You never know how he may react to a new place. If your dog takes daily medication, then don’t forget to pack it. It seems easy enough; but sometimes in the rush to pack, these things tend to be looked over.

Taking your dog along on your vacation can be a fun, enjoyable experience. However, it is his vacation, too, so you need to make sure that he has everything he needs. Food and water are required for the trip. Crates and leashes will probably be required at the hotel. Taking toys, bedding, or anything familiar to your dog can make his trip more comfortable. Be sure to check with your hotel before you leave your home to make sure there are not additional requirements.
